Historical Castle

Exercise on designing an historical European castle.

Location of the castle provides natural defense, while also allowing for a long line of sight over the land, especially from the turret of the main building.

The castle was originally built as  a tower house, but has been later expanded into a proper fortification. In the areas where the walls don't reach, the steep cliff is the main form of defense. Round towers, reaching out from the line of the wall, provide more angles of fire around the castle.

The gatehouses form a major part of the castle's defenses, turning the enemy into a static target.

The castle is designed with layered defense in mind, allowing for points for retreating and regrouping.

Different sections of the castle can be walled off if overrun, with overlook to those areas from higher points of the castle.

The courtyard, surrounded by vantage points.

Maintaining a castle requires constant work, for which workers from the nearby village are called for.

The windows higher in the building are bigger to let in more light, while not negatively affecting the defensive properties.

As the castle expands, older parts are changed to integrate well with the new areas.

Layered design allows for multiple uses for individual elements.

Inside design of the castle coming later.
